It is never too late to succeed!

“I believe that everything happens for a reason. People change so that you can learn to let go, things go wrong so that you appreciate them when they're right, you believe lies so you eventually learn to trust no one but yourself, and sometimes good things fall apart so better things can fall together.”

― Marilyn Monroe

To start with, this article is not a statistical study. It is something I wrote to trigger your curiosity the same way it triggered mine. I couldn’t stop wondering about the fact that I didn’t study art at university or paint for all those years and whether this will be a handicap for me to have a career as an artist.
On the Internet, I read that many children start showing some artistic ability at the age of 3. At this age they start developing fine-motor skills and expressing some of their ideas and feelings through art, even though they may just look like scrawls to adults. By eight years of age, kids start making more realistic drawings. At this age, children start showing enjoyment for the creation of art, whether they have innate talent or not.
Personally, I started making amazing paintings when I was 8 years old, but at the age of 12 I stopped my painting class in order to focus on my studies. In my last year of high school I joined a theater group and I took it quite serious. I was terrible at the beginning, but when the time of the show arrived I improved so much that I had the leading role. I loved it! But I remember the look on my parents’ faces, they were a bit worry that I was getting too interested in theater. “It is okay Mom and Dad, I am going to be an engineer”
I wouldn’t change my life for anything! I am happy being a chemical engineer and sharing my life with a lovely man and a boisterous cat. I would not have all this, if my life had not taken the direction it took. Nevertheless, I would like to be a painter and with practice I am becoming a good one.
I would just like say that if you are a grown up person and you think it is too late…it’s not! It is never too late to be the person that you want to be! Stop fooling yourself and do what you need to do to become your best self!

I would like to convince you by showing some numbers. I asked 22 artists about their experience. The artists were from different countries, including USA, Canada, Australia, Philippines, UK and Venezuela. I learned that 45% of them started expressing their love for art before reaching the age of 10. Half of them studied art at college or university and the other half was self-taught. Surprising 14% start showing interest in painting between the ages of 31 - 40 years old, even though they weren’t interested when they were kids. One person started taking his/her artistic career seriously when he/she was 64 years old. In these cases it is obvious that the support of their parents would have been nice to have, but not mandatory. Several artists studied art without having their parents’ support, however 38% of the 22 artists were supported by their parents and family.

All of them are amazing artists. I will add some of their websites in the comments section.

Nobody should judge the decisions of a parent, because hopefully they did what they thought was best for their child. Obviously their decisions were influenced by their fears and their past experiences. Their outlook on life was also dependent on the opportunities they saw and the economic situation. Sometimes circumstances allow us to dream, other times they force us to wake up and face reality in a very hard way.

In my personal opinion, we need teach kids the rewards of hard work. Please do your best not to transfer your fears and insecurities to your kids. We need to believe that we are invincible and that we are worthy of happily living the dream. More importantly teach them to not give up!

To finish I would like to share an amazing video. ->

Art for the dogs!

During an exhibition in 2007 at the Gallery Codex Nicaragüa, A man pretending to be an artist presented a "work" that made me wake up and decide that actions shall be taken from now on to help animals. In a gallery, he exposed a stray malnourished and scary dog to the visitors, the dog was part of his art and on the wall it was written with dog food "You are what you read." This crazy and sadic man left the dog starving and dehydrated to probe the indifference of people.
This is the moment to use art to do the opposite! http://www.actiezwerfhonden.nl/ is a Dutch charity organization devoted to help the animals in Turkey. Right now there is an Auction to help the stray dogs and cats from Turkey.
It feels so right to use something so sensitive as Art to help these innocent animals. I cannot imagine any better reason to make Art. I have donated 3 of my paintings and I want them to find a home!. So please share the link!

What matters to me!

I feel angry and I really need to understand why some people choose to live a life full of ignorance!

Have you ever felt that you are the only one that cares? That everybody prefer to close their eyes and you feel responsible to act?...I do and I can classify people behaviors in 5 category, sometimes I feel moving from category 1 to 3.

There are so many different behaviors among the people:

(1) The HEROES…Some people are really my heroes. They devote their lives to the animal cause and that is a cause without free days or holidays.

(2) The Oh good that the others do…They know about everything happening in the world and it seems that they care…but only during a conversation, because they never give a penny or share anything related…most of them because they are afraid that others will be annoyed and they will be NOT COOL!

(3) The Cowards…an example that directly touched me, was in France 11 years ago. I was living in Lyon and walking back home, I got hit in the street just like that and for no reason, by a crazy guy. People leaving the metro saw me on the floor bleeding, they did nothing! They looked at me in the eyes and walked away…The only scars I have from that day was the indifference of the people.

(4) The Opportunists…This is the part of population disgusts me. Those that know but don’t care because it is not affecting them…like most of the opportunists in my country (Venezuela) who are filling their pockets while animals and people have no medicine, no food and no security.

(5) The Sick…those are the ones sick…nothing to do about it, jail or treatment for them.

Interview:

Me: Every time I share some information or want to talk to you about something happening in my country or related to an animal or in the world in general. You prefer not to look at it or not to know, why?

- Not that I don’t want to look at it, is just that…I prefer not to.

Me: Hahaha, that is not the same?

-The other way around would be: why would I want to look at it?

Me: Well when there is awareness about something happening I do believe that people can ALWAYS do SOMETHING.

Imagine the word if all the crimes and bad practice where never discovered?

-I feel that it is not my responsibility to do that, and I have better use of my time to do other things.

Me: Ok and what if everybody thinks like you? Because a lot of people do it!

-If it is valid

Me: What means it is valid?

-A lot of people don’t have better use of their time, I am sure

Me: So you think that people that devote their lives and time to help others do it because they have a lot of free time?

-No, it is just because they found that more important than anything else.

Me: So for you it is more important to have your work done and if there is something else that can wait.

-I give my attention to something  I am really passionate at and not to what my neighbor or someone else tell me I should be sad about.

So that is mainly the reason you have to do what you have to do.

Me: If you see that something is happening in front of you would you ignore it also? Or would you try to do something?

-What are you talking about?

Me: For example if you see someone mistreating an animal or a person in front of you?

-Yes you have the obligation to do it, because you are there an you are the only person that can do it, but it is a different story if you are far away and you are not the only one. You have an immediate responsibility if you are in that position.

My conclusion:

I want to stop feeling responsible and I cannot help all the causes, people and animals, so before having a  burn out… I do limit my actions and God knows I feel sometimes guilty about that.

My question to you is what do you do? What type or person are you? Did I miss a category?

Send me a message or leave a comment.

We need to find an equilibrium but we also need to take actions and to do something. Raising awareness is a very important tool! Without it, we will be miserable!

When should you give up?

When should you give up?
By Maria Arias
Recently reading the book “Talent is Overrated”, I read about some studies that showed that many relevant people in music, sports, etc, didn’t have innate talent, but a lot of discipline and devotion to their work. The key to their talent was hard work!
I do believe we come to this world to learn, so we can achieve our ultimate goal of being happy. Being Happy is not only about having a rich and relaxed life, it is also about the satisfaction of helping others, to achieve things, to learn lessons to share and help others with, and to be proud of yourself. If you feel like you don’t have a certain talent, but it makes you happy to try, you should continue. Find ways to learn and to practice more, without being a nightmare for others and remember Never compare yourself with others! Everybody learns at their own pace and each person is unique. You need to find out for yourself whether this process is making you happy. If not, then think about the satisfaction of achieving it. Would that make you happy? Would it allow you to breathe deeply and improve your life? If the answer is yes, then continue. When should you give up? If you don’t see any more added value to your efforts, then it is time to give it up. If you are well connected to your inner self, you will know when you have reached that moment. Please don’t see it as a failure! See it like there are so many things in life that you want to do and therefore you cannot loss any more time on the things that no longer contribute to your happiness. Also sometimes you just need to let them rest... I sometimes do this with my paintings. Sometimes I have to walk away and do something else to clear my mind and then come back fresh and renewed. Then a miracle occurs and I am so happy with the result.

We learn a lot from our families. In my case, I saw my parents working hard …this was positive for me. Others see their parents giving up and not showing motivation, this in turn discourages them to follow their own development process. It is never easy… Otherwise everybody would do it! Today you have a chance to think for yourself! You cannot blame your past anymore, you are now FREE! And the world is waiting for you to discover it. You are worthy…give it to yourself. Fly high! Dare to dream! Give yourself a chance! Take a piece of paper and write down what do you want to achieve. Write the sentence as if you have already achieved it. For example: I am an Engineer, or I am a Doctor, or I am an Artist! My business is working perfectly! And remember to always add: Everybody is happy with this including me. Place it where you can see it every day! I will help you to make a more complete map in my next blog ‘The power of a wish’. For now the tips is this blog will help you to stay focused. Exciting! Please share your experience with us …
